monday is for music

| March 26th, 2007

Lately I’ve been coming across some great bands and thought I’d share some of them. I’ve gotten into the whole indie scene and am totally loving it. It’s a thrill to listen to bands that are creative, fresh, and unique…bands that haven’t sold out to the industry. Here are a few that I’ve bought/going to buy their album or am going so see live soon:

Mute Math
These guys are by far the ones getting most of the playtime in my iTunes. I’ve been following them from the very beginning and have seen them twice live. They are easily among the best bands to see live right now, and I’m not the only one saying this. Their music style is diverse and a bit hard to describe as it changes from song to song, each one a blend. If you don’t have their album, get it. And if they play anywhere near you, go see them! I’m seeing them again Tuesday at the 20th Century Theater on Tuesday and can’t wait!

Future of Forestry
Second to Mute Math in playtime would have to be Future of Forestry. Their first LP came out a few months ago and is one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. The video I posted of them is one of their slower songs, as most of their album is more anthemic and upbeat. I highly recommend their album as well.

The Decemberists
I’m heading down to Florida for Easter to visit my family and while there will see The Decemberists play at the Hard Rock. When it comes to describing music, I’ll be honest…I’m not that good at it, which is why I posted their video. : ) I’d say their genre is “folk rock”, but anyways, most of their songs are like “O Valencia”. Each one tells a story, or continues a story. Colin Meloy, their frontman, is a brilliant songwriter and might make you grab a thesaurus as you listen along. Check them out…you just might like them.

Peter, Bjorn & John
The only magazine that I subscribe to and get via snail mail is Paste Magazine, which focuses on new music, mainly indie, as well as movies, books, culture, etc. In their April issue they highlighted 4 bands to watch, one of which is Peter, Bjorn & John. Hailing from Sweden and having played together for more than eight years, this talented trio just released their latest album Writer’s Block. It’s on my list to buy now after checking out some of their songs online. They are playing May 7th in Columbus, and I’m considering going. A band that can make whistling into a catchy song just has to be worth seeing live.

On the topic of new music, I literally just came across this guy named Janove Ottesen and I’m really enjoying him. Check it out and if you don’t like it remember, it’s 7:27 am and I haven’t slept for a long time now.
